What does it actually do?
It generates noise (or listens to the room) and feeds it to Whisper, OpenAI's speech recognition model, with its silence checks switched off. Whisper learned from subtitled video, so given audio with no speech in it, it often writes the things that video says when nothing is happening. DEAD//AIR shows that text as it arrives.

Where do the words come from?
From the model. Every caption is Whisper's output during your session; nothing is scripted or seeded. The Codex in the app explains the mechanism, and is one tap from every screen.

What does ASK do?
Your spoken question is transcribed and handed to the model as prompt text, which conditions what it writes next. It is the only steering in the app.

What is the veil?
One dial for the model's decoding settings: sampling temperature, silence checks, retries, sound descriptions and the number of candidate words. Every setting it touches is listed in the app.

When is the microphone on?
Only in Room mode or while you hold ASK, and the screen shows a green border whenever it is open. See the privacy policy.

Why are some words shown as ▒▒▒▒?
Whisper's output over noise can include ugly text. Slurs and sexual text are always withheld.

The one-time unlock

The unlock is a single App Store purchase, with no subscription. If it does not appear on a new device signed in to the same Apple Account, email us at the address above.

Deleting your data

Delete sessions from inside the app. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on the device.
